Sanctus Real opens "Eternal" naming impermanence plainly rather than avoiding it — "I know this life I lead will pass away, along with every other earthly thing" — before redirecting attention rather than denying the fact: "so I will set my heart on a higher plain where my treasure lies with You."

The chorus borrows marriage language directly — "in this marriage of our hearts there is no death do us part" — inverting the traditional vow's own wording so that death, instead of ending the relationship, is the one thing excluded from it. "I am eternally Yours" repeats as the chorus's steady conclusion each time it returns.

"I could never lose Your love to sickness, oh I could never lose You to divorce" rules out the specific ways an ordinary marriage might end, and "there's no concept of abandonment" states the same security as an absence rather than a promise. "I never had enough until I found You, I never knew love until I met You" reframes the whole relationship as completion rather than addition, and the closing lines repeat the song's central contrast one last time: "this life will pass away, but You will never change."
