Skillet's "Not Afraid" is a defiant declaration of endurance, built around images of suffocation and confinement — a life spent "living underground," a foot pressed on the back, wings clipped and dreams split in two. The narrator names the damage directly: toxic fumes inhaled, a soul scarred with sores and blood, the feeling of being unable to breathe. Yet the refrain refuses to yield. "Come too far to turn back now," it insists, and the repeated pledge to keep the faith until the dying day turns survival into something closer to consecration. There's a striking refusal of ownership here — "my soul is not for sale" — that frames the whole song as a battle over who gets to claim a person's life, heart, breath, and blood.
