Steven Malcolm turns the pressure of being the one everybody counts on into a basketball metaphor that runs the whole song. The hook keeps returning to a single second on the clock at the top of the key, the ball in his hands, the whole gym waiting — and instead of shrinking from it he calls the weight a compliment. The verses fill in why: a mother who packed up the car and fled, a father who was simply gone, a sister stripping to make rent, cousins caught up in gang violence, and a childhood spent outside from age five while other kids watched cartoons. He names himself the first in his family to reach college and graduate, credits hard knocks as required coursework, and frames the microphone as the place he finally vents what he carried. There is a two-year-old at home now, and the line about not kidding around lands as the real stake behind all the sports talk. The song never quite says who handed him the ball, but the title's claim of ownership doubles as a confession that the responsibility — and the grace to carry it — came from somewhere beyond his own hustle.
