Loves Me Like A Rock

Third Day covers Paul Simon's 1973 hit, and it's worth noting the original already carried real gospel bones — Simon wrote it with a backing gospel choir, and its verses already named 'the devil' directly and called the singer 'consecrated.' Third Day's version doesn't need to add Christian content so much as bring out what was already structurally present in the source material.

'When the devil come down... I said now who do you think you're fooling?' echoes 1 Peter 5:8's warning about 'your adversary the devil,' met here with defiant confidence rather than fear. 'She loves me like a rock, she loves me like a rock of age' plays on the old hymn phrase 'Rock of Ages,' and while the song's central relationship is a mother's love, not God's, Psalm 18:2's declaration that 'Yahweh is my rock, my fortress' sits close enough behind the borrowed phrase that the two kinds of steady, unconditional love — maternal and divine — end up echoing each other rather than competing.
