Song Meaning
Third Day's “You Are Mine” is a quiet song about being moved by grace. The opening says it takes little to break the singer's heart, and hearing about God's saving grace has done so “for what seems the millionth time.” The thing that touches him is the exchange: “how you gave your life in exchange for mine.”
The pre-chorus voices a doubt that is common among believers. “Sometimes I wonder why you even love me, and why you ever chose to call me child.” The answer comes as a memory, “then I remember it's by your sacrifice.” That leads to the line that carries the song, “I am yours and you are mine.” The second verse picks up the same pattern, a tear shed over “all that I've done wrong” and everything God has done “to make it right.” Few words are used, so the mutual belonging in the chorus stands out.
