J Train

TobyMac runs a whole salvation story on rails in "J Train." The hook, "I got a ticket to ride to the other side," sets the destination, and the first verse sounds like a boarding announcement: "Sit back, relax, put on your travelin' gear," with fear and doubt left on the platform. The "J" stands for Jesus, and the train departs "right here."

Cost is the key detail. There are "no lines to fight, no ticket to price," and "your money can't buy a ticket on the J Line." That is grace described in transit terms, a fare nobody could pay and nobody is asked to. The second verse becomes testimony: the singer "missed the train more than once" until "the good conductor heard my Momma's cry," and the move from "Hades to Glory" happens "in the blink of an eye." Hearing the whistle and "All aboard" he felt he was "headed for home."

The free ticket lines up with Ephesians 2:8-9, where salvation is a gift and not something earned, and with the open invitation of Isaiah 55:1 to come without money. Jesus as the only way to the Father in John 14:6 gives the single-line track its meaning. The mood is upbeat and celebratory, closing with an invitation to climb on.
