Song Meaning

TobyMac's “Rearview” is a candid song about leaving the past behind. The first verse begins with waking from a bad dream. The singer did what his father did when he walked out on the family, and the trauma left everyone scrambling for cover. Now he is haunted by the question whether the apple fell far enough from the tree.

Fear shapes him like a sculptor, and a relationship that pulls him down keeps coming back, so he calls himself bad with it. The chorus is the decision: he has hit valleys but passed through them, sees failures but cannot lose, and has put his trouble in the rearview. The second verse admits that he keeps going back and forth like the ocean, trying to move ahead while the past is ferocious. Heavy days turn to heavy nights, but heavy love makes a burden light, and there is only one he can turn to, the King of today and the King of his rearview. He calls God's mercy his greatest gift. The beat is bright, the chant of we're movin' on is easy to join, and the story behind it is honest about a father's absence and the fear of repeating it. It suits a youth group, a recovery meeting or anyone who needs to hear that a painful history does not have to define the road ahead.

Forgetting what is behind is Philippians 3:13-14. A new thing in the wilderness is Isaiah 43:18-19, and casting burdens on the Lord is Psalm 55:22.

Just woke up from another bad dream
I did the thing my daddy did to us
When he walked out on my mother
That trauma left us scrambling for cover
I'm being haunted by the question
Did the apple fall far enough?
And it's on me like a vulture
All these fears tryna shape me like a sculptor

'Cause I be hangin' up and then you call back
I pick it up and then I'm right back
And every time I let you come around
You pullin' me down, I'm bad with it

I hit the valleys but I passed through
I see the failures but I can't lose
I think it's finally time to tell you
I put that trouble in my rearview

(Step down down) I step down on them let downs
(Step down down) My top down going outta town
I switched it up for something brand new
I put that trouble in my rearview

Been seeing double for a long time
Can't keep my eyes up off the rewind
I'm back and forth like the ocean
Tryna move ahead but the past is ferocious
Heavy days turn to heavy nights
But heavy love makes a burden light
There's only one I can turn to
King of today and the King of my rearview

I turn around it's like I never left
Your mercy's gotta be my greatest gift
I get in a little too deep
It's easy to see I'm bad with it

I hit the valleys but I passed through
I see the battles but I can't lose
I think it's finally time to tell you
I put them troubles in my rearview

(Step down down) I step down on them let downs
(Step down down) My top down going outta town
I switched it up for something brand new
I put that trouble in my rearview

We movin' on we movin'
We movin' on we movin'
We movin' on we movin'
I put them troubles in my rearview

(I'm movin' on) We movin' on we movin'
(I'm movin' on) We movin' on we movin'
(I'm movin' on) We movin' on we movin'
(I pray and movin' on) I put them troubles in my rearview

I put them troubles in my rearview
I put that trouble in my rearview
