TobyMac keeps the fifteenth-century carol's verses essentially untouched — shepherds in a field, a star shining in the east — before adding a bridge that reframes the shepherds' fear as the whole point rather than a detail to skip past: 'the shepherds they were so afraid, you flipped it all on that very first Christmas day.' Luke's gospel spends real time on that fear before the angels' message calms it, and TobyMac's addition leans into exactly that discomfort instead of smoothing it over.

'I'ma yell Noel on the streets like a newsie and sing Emmanuel' updates the carol's own instinct — spreading the news loudly, publicly — into language that fits the rapper's own voice rather than imitating the original hymn's register. The repeated 'born is the King, born is the King' keeps circling back to the carol's simplest claim underneath all the additions, treating the birth announcement itself as the one thing worth saying again and again, however the surrounding language changes.
