Fix Your Eyes

Twila Paris keeps returning to a single physical image rather than abstract devotion — "when I look into Your eyes." Each verse names a different thing that look reveals: love that died for her, hope of who she'll become, grief over sin, delight when she's been faithful. The gaze itself does the theological work.

Her chorus turns that gaze into instruction rather than just description: "saying to my soul, fix your eyes on Jesus," repeated until it sounds like a discipline being practiced in real time, not just a lyric being sung. Paris names what the fixed gaze is for too — "following close behind... blinded to the things that should not move me."

Hebrews 12:2 calls believers to run their race "looking unto Jesus," the same fixed attention Paris keeps naming, and Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 4:18 about looking "not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen." Paris's closing image — the eyes fixed "upon the prize" — treats distraction as the real danger, not difficulty.
