We Know Love

Twila Paris tests several definitions of love before settling on one in "We Know Love" — "some love is in the air, easy to start... some love is fragile and easy to break, careless and shallow and so much at stake." Each false version gets its own specific description rather than a single dismissive line.

"One Love would give up itself for a friend, one Love is faithful and true till the end, this Love is Him" answers all the earlier examples at once by naming a person rather than a feeling. "By this we know Love, that He laid down His life for us" quotes John's letter directly, using the exact same test John proposes rather than a paraphrase of it.

"This Love is not just the way that we feel, this Love is powerful fire and steel" closes the contrast plainly — not another emotional state to add to the earlier list, but something with enough substance to hold weight the others couldn't.
