It's The Thought

Twila Paris follows the familiar phrase “it’s the thought that counts” from Christmas shopping to the gift at the center of Christian faith. The opening pictures friends hanging presents on a tree and measuring affection by the loving intention behind them. Money may move in “vast amounts,” yet love gives a present its deepest worth.

The second half redirects that domestic scene toward Bethlehem and Calvary. A loving thought sends a child to a small town, then the little Lamb gives his life on a tree. Paris joins manger and cross without reducing either to seasonal decoration: Christ’s life and blood are presented as God’s costly gift for the world.

John 3:16 names the love that gives the Son, Romans 5:8 locates that love in Christ’s death for sinners, and 2 Corinthians 9:15 responds with thanks for God’s indescribable gift. The lyric invites Christmas generosity, but its final emphasis is worship—remembering that divine love acted, gave, and bore the price it offered.
