Eulogy

A funeral for the old self drives the song. "I'm doing my own eulogy," Tye Tribbett begins, noticing that "everyone's sad except me" because the loss feels like "a release cause I'm finally free." The one being buried is addressed as a former companion, "you been hanging on" too long, and who has been "taking me down."

The chorus is a sung farewell, "so, goodbye, so long," with the spoken aside "gotta die to the flesh" showing what is being laid to rest. The verses speak in the language of a breakup: "I'm sorry things have to be this way," "I'm saying my divorce," and "nothing good came out of me and you." Humor and relief mix with real conviction, and the repeated "something's gotta die, something's gotta give" shows the cost.

The closing reasoning is that death is the path to new life. "I still got a life to live," he says, and the old nature was "taking new life right out of me." Galatians 2:20 puts it as being crucified with Christ, Romans 6:6 says the old self was crucified so the body of sin might be done away with, and Galatians 5:24 says those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh.
