Nothing But The Blood (Hymn)
Song Meaning
Victory Worship's arrangement keeps Robert Lowry's nineteenth-century hymn text almost entirely intact, and that's part of what makes it land: the question "what can wash away my sin?" gets asked four times across the song, and the answer never changes. No self-improvement, no second option — just "nothing but the blood of Jesus."
The middle verses widen the claim from cleansing to identity: "this is all my hope and peace... this is all my righteousness." It's a striking thing to sing plainly, that a person's entire standing rests on someone else's blood rather than their own effort or record.
Isaiah's promise that sins "red like crimson" can become "white as snow" sits directly behind the hymn's central image. Hebrews explains why blood is the currency at all — without it there is no remission — and John's letter closes the loop, declaring that the blood of Jesus purifies from all sin. The repetition in the recording isn't filler; it's the hymn insisting the answer is worth saying again.
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
For my pardon this I see
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
For my cleansing this my plea
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
This is all my hope and peace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
This is all my righteousness
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
