I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day

We Are Messengers' "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" sets Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1863 poem to music, keeping the words almost entirely as he wrote them during the American Civil War. The opening verses sound peaceful enough — bells ringing out "peace on earth, good will to men" — but the poem doesn't stay there.

"And in despair I bowed my head: 'there is no peace on earth,' I said, 'for hate is strong, and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men'" is the turn that makes this more than a pretty carol — a direct admission that the words being sung don't match what's actually happening in the world. Longfellow wrote that verse the same winter his son was badly wounded in the war; the despair in it is real, not decorative.
