A string of “if” questions carries the verses: if you “heard mercy call your name,” if you thought you “could be free from what you’ve done,” if God could “handle all your mess,” would you come out of hiding? Each ends with the same answer, “I’ve got good news for you,” which casts We Are Messengers as bearers of an invitation rather than judges.
