Shadows

We Are Messengers open with an image that names its own problem: "I've been chasing shadows, cheap reflections of Your face." The complaint isn't about wanting the wrong things exactly, it's about settling for imitations of the one thing that would actually satisfy.

The second verse gets specific about the letdown: "what I thought would fill me left an emptiness in the end." That's an admission of failed strategy, not just disappointment — whatever "it" was, it was tried and it didn't work, which is different from never having tried at all.

Paul described the old religious system itself as a shadow of things to come, with the substance belonging to Christ — a framework this song applies more personally, to anything chasing a feeling instead of the source of it. The psalmist's claim that fullness of joy is found specifically in God's presence, not adjacent to it, backs up the chorus's refusal to settle: "I want the real thing, not just the feeling."
