The Sound

Praise is treated as a tool for breakthrough in William Murphy's "The Sound." The opening declares "there is a sound that you are waiting to hear, the sound that you will use to break your people through," and the choir answers, "praise is what we do, and we'll sing unto You, Lord, until You break us through."

Two Bible scenes are the proof. "It's the sound that you heard at Jericho" refers to the walls falling in Joshua 6:20, and "the sound that you heard in that Philippian jail" refers to Paul and Silas singing at midnight before the doors opened in Acts 16. The line that ties them together is "it's the sound that you will use to set your people free."

The second verse turns personal: "it's the sound that you heard when I was going through, when I was crying out for you." The bridge repeats "it's the sound of Jubilee, set your people free," drawing on the freedom proclaimed in Leviticus 25:10 and Isaiah 61:1, and adds a request, "release my destiny, I want it all back." The last section repeats "set your people free" as a call-and-response chant.
