Cara De Rato

Aline Barros writes this one for children, and it works by turning temptation into a cartoonish villain rather than an abstract concept — "esse bicho é doido, só pensa em atrapalhar" ("that critter is crazy, all he thinks about is causing trouble"). A "rat face" that lies, gossips, and never plays fair is easier for a child to recognize and resist than "sin" described in the usual adult terms.

The chorus gives kids an actual response to rehearse rather than just a warning: "com Jesus estou firme, vai, sai pra lá" ("with Jesus I stand firm, go away, get out of here"). Confidence, not fear, is the posture the song is teaching.

Peter's warning that the devil prowls like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour, and James' promise that the devil will flee when resisted, sit behind the song's trickster character dressed down for a younger audience. "Jesus Cristo é meu amigo, e isso nunca vai mudar" ("Jesus Christ is my friend, and that will never change") closes the song on the same confidence 1 John gives adults in different words — the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
