Called Me Higher

All Sons & Daughters wrote “Called Me Higher” about the choice between comfort and following God further. The verses list ways the singer could stay where he is: “I could just sit and wait for all Your goodness, hope to feel Your presence,” “I could just stay right where I am,” “I could hold on to who I am and never let You change me from the inside,” and “I could be safe here in Your arms and never leave home.” Each is a believable option, and each is put aside.

The chorus gives the reply: “But You have called me higher, You have called me deeper, and I'll go where You will lead me, Lord.” The singer then says, “I will be Yours for all my life.” A short prayer asks for light for the next step, “Let Your mercy light the path before me, 'cause You have called me higher.” The phrase is repeated several times at the end, which lets the congregation make the commitment together. The song fits moments of consecration or new beginnings.

Pressing on toward the upward call is Philippians 3:14. Jesus telling Peter to put out into the deep is Luke 5:4, and the word as a lamp for the path is Psalm 119:105.
