Even If
Song Meaning
Anthony Evans' “Even If” is a song of praise sung from inside real disappointment. It starts with a confession that this is the hardest song the heart will sing, because the words are broken and a dream has been stolen. Even so, the singer says that in the darkness God still speaks peace, so he lifts his hands and chooses to sing again.
The second verse is more direct. He prayed day after day that this would not happen, stood at waters that never parted, and asked whether God was even listening. The main section is a list of “even if” statements: even if a doctor says there is no medication, even if heartbreak takes a long time to mend, even if the one who caused the hurt is never sorry, even if healing does not look the way he would choose. Each one ends with the same answer, that he will still praise. The final section says goodness and mercy follow him over and over, and that God has never been far or stopped following. The honest tone and the long, building arrangement make it a song for hospital rooms, funerals, and any season when prayers feel unanswered but faith has not gone quiet.
Goodness and mercy following him is Psalm 23:6. Faith that continues even if God does not deliver is Daniel 3:17-18, and grace that is enough is 2 Corinthians 12:9.
This the hardest
The hardest song my heart will sing
My words are broken
My dream is stolen
How do I say what I don't mean
You don't owe me anything
But in my darkness you still speak peace
So I lift my hands
I'll sing again
You're good to me
You're good to me
And as I wait
I'll sing in faith
You're good to me
You're good me
Until my heart believes I won't stop singing
You're good to me
I begged and prayed
Day after day
That you wouldn't let this be
Stood at the waters
They never parted
Lord, were you even listening
You don't owe me anything
But in my darkness you still speak peace
I'll lift my hands
I'll sing again
You're good to me
You're good to me
And as I wait
I'll sing in faith
You're good to me
You're good me
Until my heart believes I won't stop singing
You're good to me
Even if the doctor tells me there's no medication to take away the pain I've begged you to
Even if I have to wait for you mend the heartbreak I believe that every tear that falls you'll use
Even if you never choose to take away the struggle, your grace will be enough to pull me through
And even If the one who caused my hurt is never sorry, and I'll never hear the words I'm longing to
Even if it feels like everyone has turned against me and everything I thought I gained I lose
Even if I never see it here this side of heaven and healing doesn't look the way I'd choose
I'll still, I'll still praise you
I'll lift my hands
I'll sing again
You're good to me
You're good to me
And as I wait
I'll sing in faith
You're good to me
So good me
I'll lift my hands
I'll sing again
You're good to me
You're good to me
And as I wait
I'll sing in faith
You're good to me
So good me
Until my heart believes I won't stop singing
Until my heart believes I won't stop singing
Until my heart believes I won't stop singing
Until my heart believes I won't stop singing
Until my heart believes I won't stop singing
And even if my heart can't find the reason
You're good to me
So good to me
You're so good to me
And the truth is you've always been, you always will be
And the truth is you've always been and you will be forever good to me
Forever good to me
Forever good to me
You'll never leave me, never forsake me
You're forever good to me
So I wont stop signing
I wont stop signing
I know you're good to me
Good to me Jesus
You've been good
I have seen it over and over
Never had to look over my shoulder
Cause goodness and mercy were following me
Goodness and mercy were following me
I've seen it over and over
Never had to look over my shoulder
Cause goodness and mercy were following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Your goodness
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Your kindness
Your goodness and mercy were following me
You are always always on my side
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
That's the kind of God you are
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
I have seen it over and over
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Never had to look over my shoulder
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
You've never been to far
Your goodness and mercy were following me
You've never stop, never stop following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Following me
Following me
Following me
Following me
Over and over
You never back up
Following me
You never back down
Following me
You never back up
Following me
You are following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
Your goodness and mercy were following me
