O Happy Fault

Four repetitions of one Latin phrase make up the whole lyric: "O felix culpa," "O happy fault." Audrey Assad leaves it unexplained and unembellished, so the weight sits in the phrase itself, a line from the ancient Easter Exsultet, where the church sings that Adam's sin was fortunate because it brought so great a Redeemer.

Repetition turns the words into something closer to a chant than a statement, letting the paradox stand without resolving it: a fall celebrated for what grace did in answer. Paul reasons the same way in Romans 5, where grace "abounded all the more" once sin had increased.
