Oh The Deep Deep Love of Jesus

Audrey Assad sings “Oh The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus,” a hymn written by Samuel Trevor Francis in the 1800s. He wrote it while crossing the Thames, and that explains the water imagery. The first verse calls the love of Jesus “vast, unmeasured, boundless, free, rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me.”

The second stanza moves the picture from above to all sides. “Underneath me, all around me is the current of Your love, leading onward, leading homeward to Your glorious rest above.” The third gives the main line, “Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus, 'tis a heaven of heavens to me, and it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to Thee.” The last verse widens the audience with the call to “spread His praise from shore to shore” and says that his love “changes never, nevermore.” Assad's arrangement is quiet, and keeps the language of the original.
