Forever

Chris Tomlin's "Forever" takes its entire structure from the refrain that runs through Psalm 136 — every line of that psalm ends the same way, "his mercy endures forever," whether it's describing creation, the exodus, or ordinary daily provision. Tomlin follows the same pattern verse by verse: giving thanks for who God is, then for what he's done, always circling back to the same closing phrase. "With a mighty hand and outstretched arm" borrows directly from how the Old Testament repeatedly describes God bringing Israel out of Egypt, and the song uses that image of decisive rescue as the basis for present-tense trust rather than only historical praise. By the bridge, the pronoun shifts — "forever You are faithful" instead of "God is faithful" — turning a psalm about Israel's collective history into something addressed directly. It's built for a room to sing together: short lines, a fixed pattern, nothing to keep track of beyond the one unchanging claim being repeated.
