Do You Hear What I Hear

Song Meaning

Christafari's reggae arrangement keeps Noel Regney and Gloria Shayne's 1962 carol structure fully intact — wind to lamb, lamb to shepherd boy, shepherd boy to king, king to everyone — each character passing the same news down the chain rather than announcing it all at once.

The bridge breaks from the relay format to say plainly what the whole song has been building toward: "that Christ is the King and the King is here... born in Bethlehem, was the Son of Man, the Lion of Judah, the Great I Am." Titles stack up quickly once the song stops being coy about who it's describing.

Luke's account of the angels announcing a Savior's birth, and Matthew's report of the magi bringing gold to a newborn king, both sit behind the carol's closing instruction to "bring to the King all your silver and gold." The king's own line near the end — "pray for peace people everywhere" — turns a chain of questions about what different characters saw and heard into a shared instruction for what to do about it.

Said the night wind to the little lamb

Do you see what I see (do you see what I see)

Way up in the sky little lamb

Do you see what I see (do you see what I see)

A star, a star

Dancing in the night

With a tail as big as a kite

With a tail as big as a kite

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy

Do you hear what I hear (do you hear what I hear)

Ringing through the sky shepherd boy

Do you hear what I hear (do you hear what I hear)

A song, a song

High above the trees

With a voice as big as the sea

With a voice as big as the sea

Well it’s as grand as the ocean

So come listen to what I say

Do you see what I see

Do you hear what I hear

That Christ is the King

And the King is here

Do you know what I know

Listen and you’ll follow

Come bring to the King

All your your silver and gold

Born in Bethlehem, was the Son of Man

The Lion of Judah, the Great I Am

Do you see what I see

Do you hear what I hear

Christ Emanuel, the King is here

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king

Do you know what I know (do you know what I know)

In your palace warm mighty king

Do you know what I know (do you know what I know)

A Child, a Child

Shivers in the cold

Let us bring Him silver and gold

Let us bring Him silver and gold

Said the king to the people everywhere

Listen to what I say (listen to what I say)

Pray for peace people everywhere

Listen to what I say (listen to what I say)

The Child, the Child

Sleeping in the night

He will bring us goodness and light

He will bring us goodness and light

(Do you know what I know?)

Do you know what I know

Do you know what I know

Do you see what I see

Do you see what I see
