Everything For Nothing

Citizens spend most of the song describing exhausting, self-directed striving — 'wings of an eagle, heart of a coward,' 'I did what I wanted, spinning out of control' — before the turn arrives, and it's worth noticing how late it comes. Most of the song sits inside the futility itself: 'it doesn't matter what I build if it crumbles down anyway... I'm doing everything for nothing just to prove I got what it takes.'

Ecclesiastes 2:11's verdict on human striving — 'all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was no profit' — sits behind the title's whole premise, and Matthew 16:26's question about gaining the world while forfeiting one's life sits behind the exhaustion in every verse. The resolution, when it finally comes, is deliberately small and physical rather than triumphant: 'I've opened up my hands, You got it all.' Open hands replace a tight grip — not a grand gesture, just the release of whatever was being clenched the whole time.
