Faith
Song Meaning
Citizens' “Faith” is a worship song about trusting what cannot be seen. The first lines describe stepping into the great unknown and walking on water with eyes fixed on a hope. The singer is putting faith in someone he cannot see, and says that the invisible God has shown him grace beyond belief.
The chorus gives the promise behind that hope: he is loved as one of God's own. The listener is invited to receive it, believe it and know it. Then comes a short statement about faith itself, that it is true sight, that it sees with new eyes and tastes of his life. In the second verse the singer admits that he is aching from the burns of fire, but he knows a day is coming soon when life will be without trial. He puts his confidence in things unseen, with full assurance that to lose his life is not defeat. The song closes with a call to run in his light. The slow build and the Citizens' wide, anthem sound suit a service about trust, an evening of prayer, or a moment when someone is making a decision and cannot see the outcome. It reads as a statement of confidence from someone who is hurting, not someone who has been spared, and that honesty is what keeps the song grounded.
Faith as assurance of things hoped for is Hebrews 11:1. Walking by faith and not by sight is 2 Corinthians 5:7, and Peter stepping onto the water is Matthew 14:29.
Walking on waters with my eyes transfixed upon a hope
I'm putting faith in someone I can't see
The God invisible has shown me grace, beyond belief
This is the promise of my hope
That I am loved as one of His own
Receive it, believe and you'll know
Faith is true sight
See with new eyes
Taste of His life
Faith is true sight
And though I'm aching from the burns of fire
I know the day is coming soon when life is without trial
I'm putting confidence in things unseen
With full assurance that to lose my life is not defeat
This is the promise of my hope
That I am loved as one of His own
Receive it, believe and you'll know
Faith is true sight
See with new eyes
Taste of His life
Faith is true sight
See with new eyes
Taste of His life
Run in His light
Faith is true sight
