Back Again

Disciple's "Back Again" traces a hard road out of addiction and heartbreak into something the singer refuses to trade away. The opening verse reaches for the Exodus image of a hand that is not too short to rescue, asking to be led through the Red Sea and past the blood and death of the enemy — while a new foe keeps holding up a picture of the man he used to be. That relapse imagery turns visceral in the second verse: throwing up, kneeling before the throne, staring into a porcelain bowl that flushes away last night's high, and the bad taste left behind when she walked out and he felt like he died. The chorus answers with a blunt refusal — ain't going back again — and a confession of exchange: once wasted, now tasted; once hated, now embraced. A better life, more than he has ever known. Later he admits the past is gone and he will never be alone, even with an empty ring finger, because he found a love strange enough that nothing could buy it back. The song ends where it began, repeating the trade until the refusal sounds less like a vow and more like a settled fact.
