Edson Mwasabwite's "Ni Kwa Neema Na Rehema" — "it's only by grace and mercy" — makes its argument through a single pointed question repeated in the second verse: "umetenda tendo gani njema," what good deed have you done? The implied answer is none, which is the whole point. Life, breath, ability, possessions — the song lists them one by one, each followed by "umepewa na Mungu," given to you by God, refusing to let any of it be claimed as earned. That's close to Paul's blunt question to the Corinthians — what do you have that you weren't given — turned into worship instead of correction, and to his description of grace as a gift rather than a wage owed for effort. "Sikutegemea," I didn't expect it, repeats like a confession that the singer's current position was never something worked toward. There's no bridge resolving into triumph or breakthrough; the song stays in that posture of surprised gratitude the whole way through, content to keep repeating the one phrase that explains everything else.
