Bye Bye Babylon

Song Meaning

Elevation Worship addresses "daughters of Zion" directly, telling them to stop weeping and start packing — "shake off your captivity, today is the day we shall be free." The song reads like a moving day, not a quiet devotional; there's urgency and motion in almost every line.

Their instruction to "take down your harp from the willow tree" borrows a specific, sorrowful image — instruments hung up because captivity made singing feel impossible — and turns it into an act of reclamation: "reclaim the long lost melody." The repeated farewell, "bye, bye, bye, bye, Babylon," treats leaving exile as something worth celebrating loudly.

Psalm 137 pictures exiles hanging their harps on willows, unable to sing the Lord's song in a foreign land, the exact scene Elevation Worship reverses here, and Paul writes in Romans 8:15 that believers receive "the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father." The song's closing chant — "Abba, come and take us home" — turns an ancient exile's grief into a homecoming song instead.

[Verse 1]

Daughters of Zion, weep no more

Pack your bags, we're goin' home

Shake off your captivity

Today is the day we shall be free

[Chorus]

Bye, bye, bye, bye

Bye, bye, bye, bye, Babylon

Bye, bye, bye, bye

Bye, bye, bye, bye, Babylon

[Verse 2]

Learn the old, forgotten songs

Sing the ones you know by heart

Take down your harp from the willow tree

Reclaim the long lost melody

[Chorus]

Bye, bye, bye, bye

Bye, bye, bye, bye, Babylon

Bye, bye, bye, bye

Bye, bye, bye, bye, Babylon

[Chorus]

Bye, bye, bye, bye

(Laugh and dance like kings and queens)

Bye, bye, bye, bye

(Our children's children shall be free)

Bye, bye, bye, bye

(Our children's children shall be free)

Bye, bye, bye, bye, Babylon

[Verse 3]

Come and take us home

Come and take us home
