New Thing Coming

Elevation Worship's “New Thing Coming,” co-led by Tiffany Hudson and Steven Furtick, announces a change before it is visible. The first verse begins with sensory detail, “There is a fresh wind and I can hear the sound,” and says the shift is “more than a feeling.” The chorus is blunt, giving orders to the obstacles, “Darkness bow down to the day / Mountains get up out of my way,” and answering a giant with “You're not greater than my faith.”

The second verse moves from the future to the present tense of release: “There is an anointing to destroy the old / To tell every stronghold you gotta let me go,” and “Out of the shadows, into the overflow.” The bridge is the most picture-heavy part. A cloud “heavy with rain” gets a different label each time it comes round, first revival, then salvation, then freedom, then provision, as the singers keep saying it is “headed our way.”

Isaiah 43:19, “See, I am doing a new thing,” is the root of the title. The sound of a fresh wind recalls Acts 2:2, and the cloud heavy with rain is the sign Elijah's servant sees in 1 Kings 18:44 before a long drought ends.
