Song Meaning
Shepherds, a night sky, and one command: "Go tell it on the mountain, / Over the hills and everywhere." Francesca Battistelli sings the carol's refrain between two short scenes. In the first, shepherds "kept their watching / O'er silent flocks by night" until "a holy light" shone through the heavens, the moment Luke 2:8-11 describes as the angel's announcement of a Savior.
The second verse drops from sky to stable: "Down in a lowly manger / Our humble Christ was born," and "God sent us salvation / That blessed Christmas morn." The brightness above the fields sits beside the plainness of the manger, and the verse presents the birth as something God sent to people rather than something they reached for.
Each return of the chorus turns the news into an assignment. That "Jesus Christ is born" is meant to travel over hills and everywhere, and the closing chorus repeats the last line again and again until it lingers. Isaiah 40:9 gives the herald a high mountain to stand on, which is the picture the title borrows.

Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere,
Go tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.
[Verse 1]
While shepherds kept their watching
O'er silent flocks by night
Behold, throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light.
[Chorus]
Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere,
Go tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.
Jesus Christ is born.
[Verse 2]
Down in a lowly manger
Our humble Christ was born
And God sent us salvation
That blessed Christmas morn.
[Chorus]
Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere,
Go tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.
Jesus Christ is born.
Jesus Christ is born.
