Greater Than

Gateway Worship builds “Greater Than” as a list of things God outranks. The first verse starts with scale (“Keeper of the day and the night / Holder of the sun in the sky”) and moves to authority, since God commands “the waters and the wind.” The line that closes each verse, “There's not one thing You're not greater than,” turns the whole catalog into a single claim.

The chorus gets personal by naming obstacles: “Greater than the mountain that's in front of me,” and “Greater than the power of the enemy.” The second verse hangs hope on “Your name and nothing less” instead of circumstances. The bridge sweeps through guilt, shame, sin, stain, fear and the grave in rhythmic pairs, each declared lesser than “the Great I AM.”

That title comes from Exodus 3:14, where God names himself to Moses. 1 John 4:4 (“the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world”) is the verse the chorus most closely paraphrases, and Mark 4:39, Jesus quieting wind and waves, supports the opening picture of a God who commands the elements.
