Blooming

Hollyn starts "Blooming" with a question she can barely finish: "Could it be? Are you sure it's me?" The singer doubts she can "hold this kind of gold," and a reassuring voice answers that nothing is purer than "a heart that's been tried." The doubt is specific. She has spent years holding a candle for everybody else, measuring herself against them, and calling it comparison that "has been cold."

Relief arrives in small physical gestures. Hope is invited back in, hands "fall out of a fist," and the refrain wonders whether it is time to "open my eyes / And realize the night / Is fading to light." By the closing section she is running "out of a haze / Towards what is clear," carried by "wings of the dawn," falling back in love and "finally blooming in my own skin."

The wings of the dawn recall Psalm 139:9, where no distance puts a person out of God's reach, and the fading night echoes Romans 13:12. The gold and the tried heart line up with 1 Peter 1:7, where tested faith is called more precious than gold. Read together, they frame the blooming as something God does patiently in her, not a self-improvement project.
