Tension
Song Meaning
Hollyn's “Tension” sounds like prayer said through clenched teeth. It opens with questions aimed at God (“What happened to my breakthrough,” “Why won't you answer my question”) and a confession of having “lost my sense of direction.” The request that follows is oddly specific: protection from “the what if's,” guidance “with the precision of a knife.”
Between the refrains she holds a promise up against what she can see: “I remember what you said to me / But I don't see signs of it happening.” The long middle stretch repeats “I thought that my time was a long time ago” like a thought she can't shake, then admits “This shade is wearing me out” and “Can't see the sky through the clouds.” Nothing resolves; the song ends still “waiting for the tension to break.”
That unfinished waiting echoes Habakkuk 2:3, where a promised vision seems slow yet “will surely come; it will not delay,” and Psalm 13:1's “How long, Lord?”, a lament that complains honestly without leaving the conversation.
What am I supposed to do
What happened to my breakthrough
Why won't you answer my question
I've lost my sense of direction
I need you to protect me from the what if's
To direct me and to guide it
With the precision of a knife
To protect me from the what if's
To direct me and to guide it
With the precision of a knife
Precision of a knife
I remember what you said to me
But I don't see signs of it happening
It happening
I need you to protect me from the what if's
To direct me and to guide it
With the precision of a knife
To protect me from the what if's
To direct me and to guide it
With the precision of a knife
Precision of a knife

I can't see which way is out
