Israel Houghton builds this entire song around one verse, quoted with almost no alteration: "rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice." Philippians 4:4 reads nearly identically — Paul's own instruction, written from prison, making the command harder to dismiss as naive optimism than it might otherwise sound.
"Oh that men would praise his name, 'til the ends of the earth" extends the song's scope outward, echoing Psalm 67:3's prayer that "let the peoples praise you, God. Let all the peoples praise you."
