Song Meaning

Joe Mettle and Ntokozo Mbambo don't write new lyrics so much as sing the Lord's Prayer directly, first in English — "our Father in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done" — then again in Zulu: "Yehla Nkosi singangeni ekulingweni, usikhulule kokubi," translated right in the lyrics as "come down Lord, do not lead us into temptation, and deliver us from evil."

Matthew 6:9-13 is the source for nearly every line here, and the song treats the prayer less like a text to interpret and more like words to simply repeat until the repetition becomes worship. "Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive our debts, as we forgive those who sin against us" follows Matthew 6:12 almost exactly, in both languages, back to back.

The song's real addition to the prayer is the refrain built entirely around one word: "amen, amen, amen." Between the two languages sits a Zulu praise phrase — "Bayete kuwe, sithi uphakeme" — a declaration of honor to a king. Singing an ancient, universal prayer in two languages at once makes its own quiet point: this isn't a private request, it's one prayer shared across very different tongues.

Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be thy Name
Thy kingdom come; thy will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven

Refrain:
Amen amen amen
Amen amen amen

Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive our debts, as we forgive
Those who sin against us, yeah

Let Your kingdom come (Amen Amen)
And Your will be done (Amen Amen)

Amen amen (Amen amen)
Amen amen (Amen amen)

Yehla Nkosi singageni
(Come down Lord, Do not lead us)
Ekulingweni usikhulule
(Into temptation, and deliver us)
Kokuphi Amen
(From evil, Amen!)
Give us this day, our daily bread
And forgive our sins as we forgive
Those who sin against us, Amen

Let Your kingdom come (Amen Amen)
And Your will be done (Amen Amen)

Amen amen (Amen amen)
Amen amen (Amen amen)

Bayete kuwe (Amen Amen ah)
Sithi Uphakeme, uphakeme, uphakeme
Bayete Bayete (Amen Amen ah)
Bayete (Amen Amen ah )

Let Your kingdom come (Amen Amen)
And Your will be done (Amen Amen)

Amen amen (Amen amen)
