What A Friend (Medley)
Song Meaning
Jordan Smith strings four separate hymns together here, and the seams barely show because each one is answering a version of the same need. "What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear" opens with companionship in suffering before the medley ever gets to celebration.
"Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus" follows immediately, turning friendship into something closer to reliance — "just to rest upon His promise, just to know thus sayeth the Lord." Trust, not just comfort, is what the second hymn adds to the first.
The medley's pivot into "Amazing Grace" — "I was lost until you found me, I was blind but now I see" — shifts the whole piece from ongoing friendship to a specific rescue already accomplished, before closing with "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," pointing past the present entirely toward "a home that's waitin' for me in the sky." Jesus' own words calling his disciples friends rather than servants, and Paul's instruction to bring everything to God in prayer instead of carrying it alone, sit behind a medley that moves from friendship to grace to a promised home in four hymns instead of one.
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege we can carry
Everything to Him in prayer
Oooh
Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
Just to take Him at His Word
Just to rest upon His promise
Just to know thus sayeth the Lord
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him
For He's proven o'er and o'er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus
Oh for grace to trust Him more
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That sure did save a wretch like me
I was lost until you found me
I was blind but now I see
Ooh, ohh, ooh
I was lost until you found me
I was blind but now I see
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by Lord, by and by
There's a home that's waitin' for me
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
There's a home that's waitin' for me
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
Ooh
Ooh
