Song Meaning
Josh Garrels' “Born Again” is a confession of an old life told in rough images. He describes arriving in a wild world, using his voice “to howl with the ghouls of night,” and living on instinct “like a beast to some blood.” By the end of the verse he admits he is losing control, with “my body, my soul slowly fading away.”
The chorus is the choice to change. “I'm my mother's child, I'm my father's son, it took me a while but my time has come to be born again.” The second verse puts him between two forces, “savior and enemy are both trying to take my soul.” He stumbles toward the light, raises his fist to fight, and then “I catch Your eye, so full of love.” Seeing that love leads him to ask, “Lord, what have I done?” and cry at the feet of the one “wounded for me.” The last line promises that in his light “we can begin again.”
The new birth is John 3:3, and the conflict within himself matches Romans 7:15. A new heart is promised in Ezekiel 36:26.
