Josh Garrels strips the Advent hymn down to its pleading core, letting the repeated cry for Emmanuel carry the weight of a people waiting in the dark. The opening verse names Israel as captive and mourning in lonely exile, a picture of longing that refuses to soften into easy comfort. Then the second verse shifts its address, calling on the Dayspring from on high to draw near and scatter the gloomy clouds of night, to put death's dark shadows to flight. That movement from captivity to light is the song's whole architecture, and the refrain answers the ache with a command to rejoice because Emmanuel shall come. Garrels keeps the language archaic and unadorned, so the hope feels ancient rather than manufactured, something inherited rather than performed.
