Sleeper

Song Meaning

A simple, repeating call rings through this song: wake up, lift your head, and let the light fall where it will. The opening lines address a sleeper directly, promising that the Lord will raise him from the dead, and the chorus-like refrain "Shine on, shine on" keeps returning like a lamp that won't go out. From there the song widens its view to a world where dead folks walk around left and right — an image of people going through motion without life — and insists that the Lord will heal them with His Light rather than leave them in the dark. The third verse turns to the crucified King coming out of that grave and puts the question plainly to a brother: do you want to get saved? It's an invitation, not a lecture. The closing lines settle into quiet trust, naming Christ as Savior and King and resting in the assurance that He will take care of everything. The whole piece has the feel of a porch song or a campfire chorus, short lines and repeated phrases doing the work of a sermon, holding resurrection, healing, and surrender in the same breath. It ends not on a grand crescendo but on a steady, everyday confidence.

Wake up O sleeper and raise your head
Lord's gonna raise you from the dead
Shine on, shine on

Dead folks walk around left and right
Lord's gonna heal them with His Light
Shine on, shine on

Crucified King come from that grave
Tell me now brother do you want to get saved
Shine on, shine on

Christ my Savior and my King
He's gonna take care of everything
Shine on, shine on
