Josh Garrels builds this song around a single, repeated plea: hold on, before I slip away. The opening lines place the speaker in a moment of real danger — flames gone, darkness, fear — and the confession that follows is blunt: the flesh and blood are strong, and what has been done cannot be taken back. The second verse turns that fear toward a specific relationship, addressing a "sweetest friend" who has been betrayed and abandoned, and naming the ache of "what might have been." The chorus returns with the same words but a colder image, a love gone cold and a life gone astray. There is no resolution offered, no triumphant final verse; the song ends where it began, still pleading. That refusal to tidy things up is what gives the track its weight.
