What Child Is This

Song Meaning

The carol opens in a stable, with a sleeping infant cradled on Mary's lap while angels offer anthems and shepherds stand their watch. From there the text turns to the humble setting itself — a manger shared with ox and ass — and to the quiet paradox of the Word lying silent while pleading for sinners. The refrain answers its own question: this is Christ the King, the one shepherds guard and angels praise, and the call goes out to hurry and bring him honor. The final stanzas widen the scene from Bethlehem to Calvary, as gifts of incense, gold, and myrrh are laid before a child who will one day be pierced by nails and bear the cross. The song holds both ends of the story in a single breath, letting the babe in the straw and the crucified King occupy the same line. Its closing invitation is to enthrone him in loving hearts, and the repeated phrase 'the babe, the Son of Mary' keeps pulling the listener back to the manger even after the cross has been named.

What child is this who laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping
Whom Angels greet
With anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping

Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding
Good Christians fear
For sinners here
The silent Word is pleading

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring Him laud
The babe, the Son of Mary

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh
Come peasant, king to own Him
The King of Kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him

Nails, spears shall pierce Him through
The cross He bore for me, for you
Hail, hail the word made flesh
The babe, the Son of Mary
