I am Not Alone

Kari Jobe builds "I Am Not Alone" around two Old Testament images stitched together — walking through deep water, and passing through "the valley of the shadow." Isaiah promises the waters won't overwhelm the one who walks through them; Psalm 23 promises no fear in that valley because of who's walking alongside. Jobe puts both in the first person and adds the line that turns them into a chorus: "you will go before me, you will never leave me." The verses name specific trouble — fire, deep sorrow, a night that threatens to close in — rather than staying abstract, which is what keeps the song from reading as generic comfort. By the bridge it has shifted from protection to identity: "you call me as your own." It's a worship song built less on describing how the singer feels and more on repeating what's already been promised, trusting that saying it enough times becomes its own kind of defense against the fear the verses admit to in the first place.
