Relationships
Song Meaning
Koryn Hawthorne opens "Relationships" describing a specific failed method before naming the correction — "tried it by the book over and over, hoping that things would change" — until a direct spiritual correction arrives: "you can't hear Me directly for yourself, but just call out His name." Effort through rule-following gets replaced with a much simpler instruction.
"Been in church all these years and we learn tradition, showing a form of God but we lost sight of the mission" borrows Paul's language about having "a form of godliness" while missing its substance, applied here to inherited religious habit rather than active relationship. "No matter who you are, God is listening" answers that critique with unconditional access rather than another set of requirements.
The song's central hypothetical, "if there was no buildings, church on a hill, I'd still be connected 'cause I know my God is real," strips away every external structure one at a time — buildings, written words — to test whether the relationship being described would actually survive their absence. "It's not about religion, it's more about relationship" closes the song repeating the same stripped-down claim until the distinction between the two becomes the song's entire remaining argument.
Tried it by the book over and over
Hoping that things would change
Heard a voice in the Spirit
Saying you can't hear Me directly for yourself
But just call out His name
When I look back over my story
God has been there every step of the way
[Chorus]
If there was no buildings, church on a hill
I'd still be connected 'cause I know my God is real
If there were no words written on a page
Whatever way He'd see fit, He still gon' make a way
It's a relationship more than religion that gets us saved
[Verse 2]
Been in church all these years and we learn tradition
Showing a form of God but we lost sight of the mission
No matter who you are, God is listening
When you call on His name, He'll give you direction
As we look back over our story
We can say, "God did it for me"
[Chorus]
If there was no buildings, church on a hill
I'd still be connected 'cause I know my God is real
If there were no words written on a page
Whatever way He sees fit, He still gon' make a way
It's a relationship more than religion that gets us saved
[Outro]
It's not about religion
It's more about relationship
I don't know what you're carrying
But I know He is real
It's not about religion
It's more about relationship
I don't know what you're carrying but I know
He's real
It's not about religion
It's more about relationship
Mm
Let's focus on what really matters to You
It's not about religion
Ooh Lord
It's more about relationship
All you gotta do is call on Him
He will
He'll be right there
He'll be right there
When you need Him most
Oh
It's about you talking to Him
And Him talking to You
Whatever you need from the Lord
It's all in the relationship
He cares about you
Oh, don't you want to be connected?
When you're home alone
And nobody's there
Know God sees you, He loves you, and He cares
It's not about the building
It's not about the pews
He wants you
He wants a personal relationship with you, yeah
If there was no building, church on a hill
I know, I know, I know my God is real
If there were no words written on a page
It's your relationship more than religion
