Surely God Is Able

Assurance is repeated until it sinks in. "Surely, surely, surely, surely, He's able to carry you through" is the chorus, and a short verse gives the setting: "as pilgrims we sometimes journey, and we don't know which way to turn, but there is One who knows the road, he'll help you carry your heavy load."

The bridge builds a call-and-response list of what God is. "He'll be a mother for the motherless, father for the fatherless," close to Psalm 68:5, and "He'll be your joy when you're in sorrow, be your hope for tomorrow." Then a run of Bible images follows: "He was Daniel's stone a-rolling, Ezekiel's wheels a-turning, Moses' bush a-burning, Solomon's rose of Sharon," pointing to Exodus 3:2 and Song of Solomon 2:1.

The titles keep coming, "He's my strong tower, He's my bow and arrow," with Proverbs 18:10 about the name of the Lord as a strong tower, and the arrangement ends on the name "Jesus" repeated, followed by vamps of "surely" and "He's able." The song never argues the point, and it sets out to remind listeners of what God has already been.
