[Verse 1]
My decision can not be put off again
I see the right choice but my heart is filled with dread
It all seems backwards in my head, my head
[Chorus]
I know it seems too wrong to be right
This way is so much harder to fight
But in the end I know it is true
This way is better, it's better for you
[Verse 2]
Choose a little pain and gain a life with joy
Accepting pleasure now will earn a life of pain
It all seems backwards in my head, my head
[Chorus]
I know it seems too wrong to be right
This way is so much harder to fight
But in the end I know it is true
This way is better
It's better for you, for you
[Bridge]
Sometimes I wonder why it's this way
When it's done the burden is gone
This discomfort will be taken away
As soon as it's over, it's over for me
[Chorus]
I know it seems too wrong to be right
This way is so much harder to fight
But in the end I know it is true
This way is better
It's better for you, for you
Better For You
Song Meaning
Kutless opens "Better For You" mid-hesitation rather than after a decision is made — "my decision can not be put off again, I see the right choice but my heart is filled with dread, it all seems backwards in my head" — admitting the correct path and the desired one are pulling in opposite directions.
"I know it seems too wrong to be right, this way is so much harder to fight" concedes how counterintuitive obedience can feel in the moment, before the chorus states its conclusion plainly anyway: "but in the end I know it is true, this way is better, it's better for you."
"Choose a little pain and gain a life with joy, accepting pleasure now will earn a life of pain" lays the tradeoff out as arithmetic rather than emotion, refusing to pretend the harder choice feels good. "Sometimes I wonder why it's this way, when it's done the burden is gone" admits ongoing confusion about the method even while trusting the outcome, and the repeated closing line, "it's better for you, for you," keeps addressing someone else as much as the singer himself.
