Look Up Child
Song Meaning
Lauren Daigle's “Look Up Child” begins with a question put to God in a hard season. “Where are You now when darkness seems to win? When the world is crumbling?” The singer then hears a reply that is only two words long, “Look up, child.” The doubt returns in the next stanza: “When all I feel is doubt, where are You now, when I can't figure it out?”
The answer expands in the pre-chorus without explaining the suffering. “You're not threatened by the war, You're not shaken by the storm, I know You're in control, even in our suffering, even when it can't be seen.” In the last section the phrase is repeated like a call, “Look up, look up, look up,” and the singer says, “I hear You calling my name.” The song never settles the question, but it treats the reply as enough for the moment.
Looking up for help is Psalm 121:1. God being in control of the storm is Psalm 46:10, and his presence in dark valleys is Psalm 23:4.
When darkness seems to win?
Where are You now
When the world is crumbling?
Oh I, I-I-I, I hear You say
I hear You say
Look up child, hey
Look up child, hey
Where are You now (where are You?)
When all I feel is doubt?
Oh, where are You now
When I can't figure it out?
Oh I, I-I-I, I hear You say
I hear You say
Look up child, hey
Look up child, hey
Look up child, hey
Look up child, hey
Look up…
You're not threatened by the war
You're not shaken by the storm
I know You're in control
Even in our suffering
Even when it can't be seen
I know You're in control
Oh I, I-I-I, I hear You say
I hear You say
Look up child, hey
Look up child, hey
Look up child, oh-oh-oooh
I hear You say, You say, You say
Look up child, hey
I hear You say, You say, You say
Look up, look up, look up, look up
Look up child, oh-ooh, ooh, oh-oooh…
I hear You say, You say, You say
Look up child, hey
I hear You say, You say, You say
Look up, look up, look up, look up
Look up child
I hear You say, You say, You say
I hear You, I hear You calling my name, oh
Look up child, hey
I hear You say, You say, You say
Look up, look up
Look up child, hey
Look up child, hey
Look up
