My Daddy My Daddy

Song Meaning

Calling God "daddy" sits at the center of Lawrence Oyor's song, and the opening lines keep returning to it: "You are my daddy / My daddy, my daddy." The worshipper sings as a child, "Your baby is singing," and then names a lifetime goal, to be "singing and dancing and chanting for the rest of eternity."

The second movement turns toward Jesus ("My Jesus, My Jesus") and calls the singer "Your beloved," so the language of family and affection widens rather than shifts. Near the end it narrows to devotion: "Only You, Only You," followed by "My darling, my darling / Your honey is singing," and a wordless run of "La la la" that lets the melody carry what words leave out.

The intimacy matches Romans 8:15, where believers receive the Spirit of adoption and cry "Abba, Father," and Galatians 4:6, which says the same of the Spirit in our hearts. 1 John 3:1 adds the astonishment behind it: what love the Father has given, that we should be called His children. The song is simple and repetitive on purpose, built for joyful, childlike singing together.
