Dirt

Mary Mary opens with a line that sounds almost like a joke before it turns into an argument — "God made dirt and dirt don't hurt" — building a whole song around an unglamorous truth about gardens: "bugs and thorns and weeds, they grow there," and somehow still help "create vivid color variations."

The verses get specific about what that means in a life instead of a garden: "I have cried myself to sleep," "life at times can make you weak," but "when you work hard and you pray," things don't stay the same. Even failure gets reframed — "champions never accept defeat, they fall and get back on their feet" — as part of the same growing process the dirt makes possible.

Jesus makes a similar point in John 12:24, that a seed has to fall into the ground and die before it can bear fruit, and James 1:2-4 calls trials something to find joy in because they produce endurance. Mary Mary's chorus turns both ideas into something almost playful: "we need a little bit of dirt to grow."
