This Love

Mary Mary opens by pointing out how casually the word gets thrown around — "when you say love, you use it so lightly" — before offering their own definition built from specifics: "loving me, where I am, how I am, just for who I am, all my good and bad."

Their chorus refuses to let the love stay vague or human-scale: "this love comes down from the heavens... better than mothers, better than fathers... from God the Father." Mary Mary doesn't soften the claim to make it easier to accept — a guest verse pushes back on behalf of the skeptical listener ("doesn't fit the life I lead") before answering it directly: "I don't care what you've done, His heart is for everyone."

John writes in 1 John 4:19 that "we love him, because he first loved us," the same order Mary Mary insists on, and James calls every good gift one that comes down "from the Father of lights" in James 1:17. Their closing plea — "everybody oughta know his love is real" — treats that love less as sentiment and more as information worth passing on.
